From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

“From the sublime to the ridiculous is but a step”…Ulysses (James Joyce), 1922

It is a saying that has roots in the 18th century.

What does it mean?

Sublime: of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe.

Ridiculous: deserving or inviting derision or mockery; absurd.

We are at a point where one of the brightest, most thoughtful and classiest presidents is leaving office. He considers decisions. He looks at all sides of an issue. He compromises. He puts the needs of the less fortunate above his own financial state. He will have a longstanding legacy  and will go down in US history as one of the great ones. Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Obama.

We are at a point where one of the least informed, thoughtless presidents is about to take power.  He tweets like a schoolgirl. He is thin skinned and sees every disagreement as a challenge to his manhood. He mocks the disabled. He puts his own wealth and family business interests ahead of anything else. He will go down in US history as one of the great catastrophes of democracy. Buchanan, Harding, Andrew Johnson, Trump.

It is not the end of the world. As President Obama has said recently:

“The only thing that is the end of the world…is the end of the world.”

But this ridiculous man. This boy-clown. This tweeter will dominate the news for the next 4 years. He will be a source of entertainment. A source of sadness. A major step backward.

But eventually the “ridiculous” will end. Hang in there. The tide of history moves forward.

  1. Interesting reply. I think the fact that you have commented on a post you have not read, by a person you have never met, speaks volumes. It is, in a nutshell, the Trump supporter mentality.
I will stick to evidence and logic, the mainstays of liberalism. While I will continue to criticize Mr Trump and his naive ideas about the world, I nave no need to wish anyone any ill. I do not fear the future as I am confident that we will continue to make gradual progress.

I want to make it clear that I did not read one word of this little rant of yours. I am posting my comment here simply because it was your most recent. I will not be reading your reply either.

You lived to make a fool out of yourself protesting the Democrats war in Vietnam with the other hippies and saw it make no difference at all.

You lived to see real America take the country back in 1980 and keep it in 1984.

You lived to see the Greenhouse Effect, then Global Warming and then Climate Change myth take root and then fail to materialize.

You lived to see your first deity Bill Clinton take office only to bring disgrace to the country and give rise to Osama Bin Laden.

You lived to see your second deity Barrack Obama take office only to reveal himself to be a useless buffoon that has failed miserably and brought our country to it’s lowest point ever.

You lived to see the true citizens of this nation choose Donald Trump as their champion. You saw as he soundly defeated your would be third deity Hillary Clinton in three debates and win the election in spite of massive voter fraud by the Democrats.

Finally, you have lived to see PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DONALD JOHN TRUMP take the oath of office.

You may now pass away with my consent. Rest in peace. I may check in on you on November 9, 2020. I take so much joy in the knowledge that every day for the next four and possibly eight years will bring you so much frustration and anger.
